This hidden jewel takes some locating, but if you’re looking for a place with character that’s not too expensive, it could be just right. Number9 is housed in a 1937 Art Deco Mansion and decked out in a tasteful mix of original and contemporary furnishings. The hotel has only five rooms and feels more like an upmarket home stay than a hotel, with laid-back, friendly service.
Rooms are large and some have peaceful balconies, although make sure to specify you don’t want the room that has a bathroom across the corridor rather than in the room. To get here, find number 355 on the southern side of Jianguo Xi Lu, just east ofTaiyuan Lu.
Walk through the entrance gate and continue past a line of pretty houses to the end of the lane, where you turn left. At the end you’ll see a large wooden gate where you buzz for entry. Or, if you want to save the Hassle, call before you arrive and someone from the hotel will come and meet you on Jianguo Xi Lu.
