Separation of Church and State is so strong in France that, regardless of religious affiliation, only civil marriages are legal. In practice, French couples follow a quick legal ceremony at the town hall, with a more traditional religious ceremony afterwards. Every Mairie and Hôtel de Ville in France has a nicely decorated room for these civil unions. In Menton, the decoration of the wedding room is extraordinary. During 1957 and 1958, at the invitation of the mayor, who was apparently a pal, artist Jean Cocteau covered the walls and ceiling with romantic modern frescoes. The paintings depict eternal lovers, she wearing a traditional Mentonaise “capeline” and he in a Mediterranean fishing cap. Everyone who gets married in Menton uses the room – and that includes foreign visitors. Apparently, it is particularly popular with Japanese couples. You can visit the Wedding Room to see the frescoes even when a wedding is taking place.
