The location of this shrine, about 17 km/10½ miles above Collobrières, makes it ideal for a hearty hike or cycle ride. At 771 m (2,530 feet), it is close enough to the summit of the Massif des Maures to offer good views along the coast as far west as Toulon and, on clear days, across the Mediterranean to Corsica. Whether you walk up along the GR90 (which you can join near the tourist office in Collobrières), ride or drive up the D39 (alongside and sometimes merging with the footpath), the journey winds back and forth through deep, cool forests, with newer and fresher views appearing around every hairpin turn. The current chapel was built in the mid-19th century around ruins that go back to 517, when the cult of Notre Dame first began to appear in the region.
