Heidelberg Travel Guide
Introduction
Heidelberg is one of Germany's most romantic student towns, overlooked by one of Germany's most romantic castle ruins, Schloss Heidelberg. Of the first it can be said that Heidelberg is home to an ancient university, one of Europe's oldest, founded in the 14th century, with a 30,000-strong student population that gives the town its youthful verve and cultural underpinnings. As for the Heidelberg castle, it looms large on a hill above the town and is among the most visited castles in Germany. The city itself unfolds on the banks of the Neckar River in a steep valley in the Odenwald, with an authentic old town featuring an atmospheric marketplace, scores of Baroque buildings, centuries-old Gothic churches, and a lovely bridge, Alte Brücke (Old Bridge), which spans the Neckar and, looking back, offers superb views of the Heidelberg castle. The city has a vibrant café and bar scene, a rich trove of museums and galleries, and festivals of note besides. Ultimately, though, Heidelberg is a relic of the era of Romanticism, situated at the intersection of four "tourist roads," which has emerged as a hugely popular travel destination, drawing over 3.5 million visitors a year.
Location
Heidelberg is located in the German state of Baden-Würtemberg in the southwest part of Germany, north of Karlsruhe and south of Mainz. It sits on the banks of the Neckar River in a steep valley in the Odenwald.
