It was originally constructed by Otto I, but his church was destroyed by a town fire in 1207. The current cathedral built between 1209 and 1520 claims to be the first Gothic style cathedral in Germany. (Both Marburg in Hesse and Trier along the Mosel claim the first Gothic church.) Small parts of the Romanesque are still visible. The statues of the wise and foolish virgins, as well as the graves of Otto I and his wife Editha, date from the mid-12th century.
