While most parts of the border dividing the two Germanys were destroyed in 1990 at the pace that a bulldozer could drive, a small part was kept intact near the town of Hötensleben on the road to Schöningen. The border was an incredible feat of technology and included two concrete walls up to 3.4 m (10 feet) high, fences, anti-tank spikes, patrol roads, search lights, watch towers and, in some places, automatic guns.
