Lovers of the Romanesque should visit the Stiftkirche St Cyriakus (Collegiate Church of St Cyriacus) in the small town of Gernrode about seven km (4.2 miles) south of Quedlinburg . This church is one of the best examples in Germany of Romanesque architecture dating from the Ottonian period (10th century). Construction begun around 959, but the building was altered early in the 12th century. It has three aisles and a flat ceiling as was common in the period. In the south aisle is a rare example of an Ottonian sculpture. The baptismal font is from the 12th century. The east and west choirs are not perfectly in line due to ground movements through the centuries that also severely damaged the long aisles, which were restored in the 19th century.
