It is incredible how much the history of the church has playedin the lives of the people. Half of the population, the sweat of great numbers of nameless artists and the employment of villagers and craftsmen, were devoted to construction done in the name of or by the church. The Franciscan Church and Monastery, is a prime example. Northwest of the castle, it was built by the declaration of the Pope in 1332. Although there were some modifications in the 17th and 18th centuries, the rosettes and carved animal and human figures are 14th century adornments by an unknown sculptor, as is the octagonal pillar in the middle of the sacristy, the keystones, and the corbel blocks. Rákóczi (of the Rákóczi revolution) reputedly prayed in the Gothic oratory above the sacristy. But the Turks were here too. Rather than obliterating the structure, they converted parts of it for their use.
