Across from the Basilica is a must see, from the stand point of the author. After all, it is the the repository of Dante’s Divine Comedy, and I mean an early Latin version from 15th century. The Lyceum Konyvtar at Eszyterhazy ter 1 is one of the most striking and beautiful libraries I have ever seen, bar none, and it is filled with many original wood carvings. Built between 1765 and 1785 after the style of Louis XVI, it is today a teacher’s college. The hall in the western wing is filled with frescoes that symbolize the four university faculties, and the library in the south wing is a spectacular experience, for depicted in wood and fresco across the ceiling is the Trident Synod (1545-1563), a glorious depiction in yellow and gold. Upstairs, Hungary’s first observatory will give you a bird’s-eye view of Eger through a unique system of mirrors and lenses devised in the Middle Ages.
