Take the road alongside it to join the steep panoramic Via Santa Maria at San Marco, a taxing climb in hot weather, but one that affords beautiful views over Val di Chiana and Lake Trasimeno on its way up to the 19th-century mock-Romanesque Basilica di Santa Margherita. Along the walk you will see the 15 Stations of the Cross, with mosaic illustrations by Gino Severini and, opposite San Marco, the ancient Porta Berada. According to legend, the St Margaret whose remains are guarded in the basilica, entered Cortona for the first time through this gate.
