Via Roma leads through the Porta Roma entrance gate back to town, passing the 15th-century Chiesa di Sant’Agostino and 13th-century Chiesa di San Domenico, with the funerary monument of Cardinale De Bray by Arnolfo di Cambio on the way. It stands opposite the Palazzo e Chiesa di San Giovanni, which is today home to the Enoteca Regionale. This is an important port of call on any serious wine fan’s sightseeing route. The complex itself was restored to its present condition in the 17th century after serious earthquake damage, but some of the original Romanesque construction (said to have been started in 916) can be seen on the interior marble walls that are frescoed with a Madonna and Child.
