Verona’s oldest and largest enoteca is in a 17th-century palazzo and has an expansive medieval wine cellar with nearly 2,000 wines. Once used as a warehouse for goods being transported via the Adige, it was later a refuge during World War II bombing raids. The enoteca organizes one or two wine tastings each month and individual tastings may also be scheduled on request. One of their oldest vintages is a Cognac from 1802 valued at nearly Euro 20,000 dollars. Tastings consisting of three wines cost between Euro 15 and Euro 20, depending on the wines. Signor Bixio has owned this enoteca since 1978 and, in addition to the tastings, sells many wines and other locally produced gourmet products. Each week the enoteca typically showcases a different wine and offers clients a free tasting. Even if you’re only stopping in to purchase a bottle, request a tour of the wine cellar.
