Piteå is a fairly small city of some 40,000 people, yet well-known throughout Sweden for two things, the beach and a dish known as palt. The famous beach resort, Pite Havsbad, is particularly popular with Norwegians. The people of northern Norway have to travel far south in their own country to find beaches like the ones in Piteå.
But it is no surprise that people, regardless of nationality, enjoy coming to Piteå in the summer. The city center has a lot to offer for a
small town, with plenty of shops and cafés to accommodate all the tourists in the summer. Piteå was actually the first city in the country to have a pedestrian street, established in 1961.
