Hangzhou Travel Guide

Introduction

Hangzhou is one of the two paradises below heaven (the other being Suzhou), at least that’s the consensus. And there’s some truth to that, for Hangzhou is one of China’s most beautiful cities, which 13th-century Venetian merchant-traveler Marco Polo once described as "beyond dispute the finest and the noblest in the world." Indeed, it enjoys a lovely setting on the shores of serene Xi Hu, or West Lake, surrounded by tea-covered hills, celestial temples and ancient caves adorned with Buddhist carvings. To add to that, the city is hugely visitor-friendly, with good shopping, good restaurants, a vibrant nightlife, trendy districts, and outdoor pleasures such as biking and hiking on its doorstep. Ultimately, here’s a city of good vibes, dubbed the “Honeymoon Capital of China,” where the drink of choice is – what else? – green tea!

Location

Hangzhou is located in the Zhejiang province in Eastern China. It sits on Hangzhou Bay in the Yangtse River Delta, with the city center actually built along the north and east shores of West Lake, just to the north of the Qiantang River. The city is approximately 110 miles (180 km) southwest of Shanghai.
