Aspen Travel Guide

Introduction

Aspen is America's most famous ski destination. And that's an understatement. For, as ski resorts go, Aspen is unsurpassed, incorporating four topnotch lift-serviced areas – Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk Mountain and Snowmass Mountain – collectively offering more than 160 miles (256 km) of ski trails, accessed via scores of ski lifts which on a combined capacity basis can carry over 25,000 skiers up the mountain per hour. The Aspen ski areas are all within easy driving distance of each other, and kept in tip-top shape by a large fleet of snow-grooming and slope-conditioning machines. There's also a well-equipped and well-trained ski patrol to ensure the safety of skiers. But with all the high investment, be forewarned that lift tickets command nothing short of top dollar!

Location

Aspen is situated in the Rocky Mountains in northwestern Colorado, approximately 210 miles (336 km) west of Denver. It can be reached by first flying into Denver International Airport and then to Aspen's own airport; or by driving west from Denver on the Interstate 70 to Glenwood Springs and then State Highway 82 southward to Aspen – a 4- to 5-hour drive, depending on the traffic and road conditions during winter. A slightly shorter route is over Independence Pass, although this is often closed during heavy snowfall in the winter months.
