Nürnberg (Nuremberg)
Nürnberg, Nuremberg in English, is a city of a half million people, the second-largest in Bavaria, situated on the River Pegnitz. It is most famous for its Nazi heritage. In fact, for many, it is the city of the 1930's Nazi rallies, the Nuremberg Laws, and, at the end of World War II, the Nuremberg Trials. Here, sights associated with Nazis are highly visible, relatively easily accessible, and most of them well worth seeing. But in all fairness to Nürnberg, the city is more than just a compilation of Nazi relics and reminders. It has a glorious history of eight centuries as a political and cultural hub, with a marvelous old town to show for it. It has ancient walls and city gates, fabulous old buildings and churches, first-class museums, and an absolutely charming market square with a lovely and supremely historic town hall. It also has a 12th-century castle, the triumphant Kaiserburg, which is the highlight of any visit to the city. In addition, Nürnberg has scores of beer halls and restaurants serving traditional Northern Bavarian cuisine. Plus, it hosts a popular Christmas market.
Nürnberg's most famous son is Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer. Its most famous food is Nürnberger bratwurst. Its most famous beer is the Kloster Andechs monastic brew.
Nürnberg is situated in the southern part of the Franken (Franconia) region, some 105 miles (170 km) north of Munich, near the geographical center of Germany. It has a population of 506,000.
