Pontevedra

Pontevedra is an ancient port city on the Galician coast in northwestern Spain, closer to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, than to Madrid. It is often described as "a definitive old Galician town," albeit a sleepy one, with several dusty old plazas and cobbled streets in its old quarter, peppered with a contingent of unpretentious restaurants and cafés. Here life moves at a snail's pace and nothing much happens and there's not much to do, save for a trip to Praza do Teucro which springs to life on market days when farmers from nearby peublos bring their produce to town, and parts of Las Cinco Calles which begin to stir in the late evenings. The area around the old town, Zona Monumental, offers good strolling possibilities, as does the promenade on the ria (inlet), while the bridges across the river Lérez offer good vistas of the city as it scrambles up the surrounding hillsides. Pontevedra's harbor has associations with Christopher Columbus, whose ship, the Santa Maria, was built here.

Pontevedra is situated near the northwestern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, in the valleys of the Lérez and Tomeza rivers, surrounded by mountainous regions. It is just 57 miles (90 km) north of the border of Portugal, and 382 miles (610 km) northwest of Madrid. It has a population of approximately 82,000.
