Akranes
Akranes is Iceland's "first fishing village." It is now also one of the country's largest fishing ports. And, with a population of approximately 5,600, it is the ninth-largest town in Iceland.
From the tourist perspective, Akranes has a few knickknacks in store, including a couple of museums, three century-old lighthouses, and a handful of other historic relics that add to the interest. And all this despite the fact that present-day Akranes is essentially an industrial town with a cement plant, an aluminum smelter, a fish-processing factory, and a shipyard.
There are also a few other smaller communities quite close to Akranes - principally Husafell, Mosfellsbaer and Reykholt - that hold some interest and are reached on roads that either pass through or nearby Akranes, making the town a mini crossroads of sorts.
Akranes lies just 10 minutes off the Ring Road and a 30-mile drive from Reykjavik, and is therefore relatively easily accessible from the capital city.
