Montana's Glacier Country
Glacier Country, the name given the mountain landscape of western Montana, celebrates the glaciers that once overlayed it. When the ice sheets retreated, roughly 20,000 years ago, they left U-shaped valleys shouldered by peaks of surpassing magnificence. Glacial remnants still hang on some north-facing slopes. Shivery mini-lakes nestle in mountain cirques. Larger lakes lie deep in glacier-ground valleys.
