Zaragoza Travel Guide
Introduction
Zaragoza is a stylish and supremely modern city with Castillian roots and a Euro vibe. It is known for its local gastronomy and its 21st-century architectural flourishes, the latter, at least in part, a spillover from the 2008 Expo which Zaragoza hosted in the summer of that year. Yet, Zaragoza is also a city that is largely built around an ancient core that dates from the Roman era, around 24 BC, and thus offers up treasures from centuries past, albeit few and far between.
Location
Zaragoza is situated on the banks of the Rio Ebro in northwestern Spain, a short hop from the Pyrenees. It is the capital of the province of Aragón, and lies approximately equidistant from Madrid, Barcelona, Bilbao and Valencia, about 200 miles (320 km) from each.
Zaragoza has high-speed rail links to most major cities in central and northern Spain.
Zaragoza's 21st-century highlights include Puente del Tercer Milenio (Fifth Millennium Bridge), Torre de Agua and the Pavilion of Aragón, the last two from the 2008 Expo. While in its old quarter the principal draws are the turreted 11th-century Aljaferia Palace, the classic La Seo Cathedral, the intricately-decorated Santa Maria Magdalena Church, the multi-spired landmark Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar that rises from the banks of the Ebro, and the old Puenta de Piedra that spans the Ebro. The city's ancient Roman walls also hold some interest, and two museums, the city's Museum of Fine Art and Camón Aznar Museum, have superb collections of art.
