Lahn Valley
The Lahn Valley is Germany's ecotourism central, and a hidden gem of sorts. It is an area of supreme beauty, situated largely in the German state of Hesse, with parts of it spilling over into the Rhineland and even Westphalia. The valley strings out along the Lahn River, a tributary of the Rhine that runs some 246 kilometers (153 miles) from the Lahnhof to Koblenz, dotted with lovely old towns and ancient castles, and wine growing areas to boot. The river offers in it an important waterway for canoeing and even small motor yachts for tourists, while the valley has walking trails and a thoroughly enjoyable bike path that journeys through the valley, down the Lahn Holiday Road.
The Lahn Valley's principal towns are Marburg, Wetzlar, Braunfels, Weilburg, Limburg, Bad Ems and Fulda. Marburg and Limburg are of particular interest, both with remarkably well-preserved medieval town centers. Still, they are all small towns with atmosphere, with populations ranging between 10,000 (Braunfels) and 80,000 (Marburg).
The Lahn Valley and its towns are easily accessible from Frankfurt, usually within an hour by either car or train.
