Arezzo Travel Guide
Introduction
Arezzo is an ancient Etruscan city that clings to a steep hillside just to the southeast of Florence, while its inhabitants, the Aretines, often portrayed by their northern brethren, the Florentines, as "snobby," proudly cling to their beloved city. Arezzo is actually the most peaceful of the Tuscan cities, with an important commercial and military history that has forged a character quite distinct from its other Tuscan neighbors, giving rise to the moniker for the entire province, “anticamera dell’Umbria” – "Umbria's Lobby." The city has a charming historic center, largely pedestrianized and a joy to discover, with scores of relics and monuments strewn about, many of them dating from Arezzo's artistic and cultural heyday in the late 12th century. There are lovely, centuries-old churches and palaces here, as well as ancient city walls, a Roman amphitheater, narrow cobbled streets, and a sloping, red-brick medieval plaza where Giostro del Saracina – Joust of the Saracen – is staged every year, with knights on horseback charging a wooden target to score points. Arezzo, by the way, is also the principal locale of Robert Benigni's ballyhooed 1997 film, Life is Beautiful.
Location
Arezzo is situated in central Italy, some 50 miles (80 km) south os Florence, at an elevation of 971 feet (296 m) above sea level.
