Seattle

Ideologically, Seattle is not dissimilar to other such West Coast liberal bastions as San Francisco and Portland: it is a progressive city, well-buffered from the conservative element. But in its physical attributes, it has the edge, for it fronts on beautiful Elliott Bay and Puget Sound, and has as its backdrop lush forests and the stunning Olympic Mountains.

Seattle is a vibrant city, rich in the visual and performing arts, and one of only a half dozen cities in the US that supports a major symphony, opera, and ballet company. It has scores of art galleries and museums and entertainment and sports venues, and is filled with fine restaurants, funky cafés and coffee shops, flagship retail outlets, upscale boutiques, distinct and exciting neighborhoods, and a colorful waterfront that has never gone out of style. The city also has a highly distinguishable skyline, dominated by its 1960s Space Needle, but one that continues to evolve.

And we can add this about Seattle: it’s a city that is ideally suited to visitors, for it has a good public transportation system, particularly its monorail which rides above the city streets and links Downtown Seattle to the Seattle Center, where the Space Needle is located. Besides, most places of interest in the city’s Downtown and along its waterfront are within easy walking distance of each other and city hotels.

Seattle has a population of approximately 550,000, and is the largest city in Washington State. It can be reached by air, with several commercial flights arriving and departing from the Seattle Airport, or by way of Interstate 5 from either north or south.
