Ayutthaya Travel Guide

Introduction

Ayutthaya, just to the north of Bangkok, is an ancient city at the confluence of the Lopburi, Pa Sak and Chao Phraya rivers, which for 417 years was the capital of Thailand, a bustling metropolis with a population of more than a million – twice that of London at the time – and a meeting place for European and Asian traders, until it was finally destroyed in 1767 by the Burmese. There are still ancient wats – temples – pagodas and other relics here, vestiges of Ayutthaya's glorious past, and museums that tell the story of its rich history that dates from 1350 AD and spans a rule by 33 successive kings. But for the most part the city stands as an historical landmark in the ancient Kingdom of Siam, the ruins of the old city ensconced in the Ayutthaya Historical Park, and offers in itself a worthwhile day trip from Bangkok – by road, rail or ferry – all of 90 minutes away.

Location

Ayutthaya is situated on an island formed by the confluence of the Lopburi, Pa Sak, and Chao Phraya rivers, some 50 miles (80 km) north of Bangkok. It is on the main north-south railway line running between Bangkok and Chiang Mai.

How to Get There

The best way to reach Ayutthaya is to fly into Bangkok, then journey by train or bus or car south to the ancient city.
