Zempléni Mountains

The Zempléni Mountains run along the north of the country. They are essentially the lower extension of the lovely Carthanians, forming part of the border between Hungary and Slovakia. Starting out as a largely volcanic ridge, they wind through a stunning landscape of woods, caves, ridges and passes, averaging between 1,800 and 2,400 feet and peaking at 2.682 feet at Nagy-Milic Mountain, high above the surrounding country. The heart of these mountains is the Zemplén Nature Reserve, a 61,750-acre expanse of virgin forest crisscrossed by nature trails. Here, plants and wild flowers found nowhere else in the world flourish, and rare species of birds and other wildlife make their home, among them the stealthy lynx and proud wolf, and the regal golden eagle. Actually, nearly 6,000 acres, about a tenth of the park, have been set aside as protected habitats for the area's indigenous flora and fauna.

Zempléni Mountains lie more or less directly north of Budapest, parts of them reached on Route 3, with accommodations available in a handful of towns situated along the periphery of the park, namely Sárospatak, Sátoraljaújhely and Tokaj.
