Berchtesgaden Travel Guide

Introduction

Berchtesgaden is an area of supreme natural beauty, backed by the Alps and sprinkled with picturesque little towns and villages. It boasts some of Germany's tallest peaks – most notable among them Mount Watzmann which is the second highest mountain in Germany at 8,899 feet (2,713 m), after Zugspitze, and a constant presence in the area – as well as the stunning glacial lake, Königssee. It is, however, also an area closely associated with the Nazis, where the highest-ranking Nazis once maintained holiday villas and where Hitler's famous "Eagle's Nest" – Kehlsteinhaus – still stands on the lofty Kehlstein mountain, offering superb all-round views and drawing visitors by the bus load. The Berchtesgaden area, besides, remains increasingly popular with hikers, cyclists, climbers, and, in the wintertime, with winter sports enthusiasts, with excellent venues for all. Berchtesgaden, we might add, is also a town in the Berchtesgaden area, located just 3 miles north of the lake Königssee, along the northern periphery of the idyllic Berchtesgaden National Park.

Location

Berchtesgaden is situated in the southern part of the German State of Bavaria, adjacent to the border with Austria. It is 18 miles (30 km) south of Salzburg, Austria, or 112 miles (180 km) southeast of Munich.
