Auch Travel Guide

Introduction

Auch, a small town just to the west of Toulouse, is famous mostly for its cuisine, in particular foie gras, the liver of an overfed duck or goose, and floc, a unique wine, indigenous to France's Gascony region, of which Auch is the historic capital. The town itself is centered around the striking Cathédrale Sainte-Marie, a superb example of late Gothic architecture, remarkable for its exquisite stained-glass windows. Auch is known, too, for its colorful produce market and its associations to Charles de Batz, Comte d'Artagnan, who was born in the nearby Château de Castelmore and made famous by 19th-century French novelist Alexandre Dumas.

Location

Auch is situated on the River Gers, just to the west of Toulouse, in the Midi-Pyrénées region in southern France. It is the historic capital of Gascony.
