Introduction

Hanover, Hannover in German, is situated on the River Leine. It is the capital of the German state of Lower Saxony, and a major center of northern Germany. It is a city of greenery and cultural events, known for its fairs and expositions, as well as its fairground which is the largest in the world, and its Oktoberfest which is the second largest in the world. Its most famous gardens are the Royal Gardens of Herrenhaus, which are among the most important Baroque gardens of Europe. Its most famous landmark is the Neues Rathaus (new city hall), a fabulous Baroque edifice reflected in the Masch Pond.

Location

Hanover is located approximately 145 kilometers (90 miles) south of Hamburg, and is a major crossing point of rail lines and autobahns.

Hanover also has universities of national standing, a zoo that is one of the best in Europe, a suburban rail system that is Germany's newest and most reliable, an Old Town that is dominated by an old market church and an old town hall, and a mix of old and new visitor attractions that include the well-preserved ruins of the Aegidienkirche, the Anzeiger Tower Block, and the CeBIT conference center which is a study in perspectives. For culture hounds, the city has a host of excellent museums, more than 40 theaters, and scores of cabaret and musical venues. And, lest we forget, Hannover is fertile ground for nurturing rock bands, the most famous to date being the Scorpions and Fury in the Slaughterhouse.
