Belluno Travel Guide
Introduction
Belluno is a city of the Dolomites. This is where you can see the fabled mountains at their most dramatic. Here, just to the north of the city, the imposing Monte Schiara cluster, the most impressive of the range, rises in sheer rock faces and shimmering, jagged peaks – the likes of Mounts Serva and Talvena and Gusela del Vescovà (Bishopric's needle), which are among the most famous of the Dolomite peaks. Indeed, for skiers and climbers, there's much to cheer about, for within a stone's throw of the city are mountain refuges with well-groomed slopes and an extensive network of trails connected by chair lifts and cable cars. There are lovely little resort towns, Alpine hamlets, and numerous outdoor recreational venues, all with easy reach of Belluno. The city itself has ancient gates, centuries-old palaces and churches adorned with paintings by local masters, a fabulous fountain at the center of its main square, and, while predominantly Italian, it has discernible Austrian influences that add to its alpine flavor. Ultimately, though, Belluno offers in itself the perfect base for exploring the ruggedly beautiful Dolomites.
Location
Belluno is situated some 62 miles (100 km) north of Venice in Italy's Eastern Dolomiti region, at an elevation of 1,280 feet (390 m) above sea level.
Trivia
Belluno's most famous sons are Pope John Paul I, head of the Catholic church until 1978, and Italian novelist Dino Buzzati, author of The Tartar Steppe (1940).
