Introduction
Naples, Napoli in Italian, is mostly about food – though not entirely. It is, after all, the home of the modern pizza, a crusty sheet of baked dough with olive oil, herbs, cheese and tomatoes, originally created in the 19th century as the Neapolitan flatbread; and in 1889, to commemorate a visit to the city by Italy's Queen Margherita, offered anew as the Pizza Margherita, served with toppings of tomatoes, mozzarella cheese and basil, representing the colors of the Italian flag – red, white and green. Spaghetti, too, was first introduced in Naples, as were a host of other foods such as gelato, the fruity Italian ice-cream, and the Neapolitan pastry desserts struffoli, zeppole, babà, sfogliatelle and pastiera. The popular lemon liqueur limoncello also originated here. Still, even though gastronomy is front and center, Naples isn't only about food. It is just as famously a city of antiquities. It is, in fact, one of the oldest continuously-inhabited cities in the world, with roots in the Bronze Age, in the 2nd millennium BC, and thus brimming with a rich trove of ancient monuments and such hugely significant historical sites as Pompeii and Herculaneum in close proximity. It also has the largest historic city center in Europe – encompassing some 4,200 acres (1,700 hectares)! – and remains a cultural center of monumental status, with echoes of the Renaissance and Enlightenment eras and with associations to such revered Italian literary figures as Virgil and such national epics as the Aeneid.
