Introduction

Agde, a small city on the river Hérault, unfolds in three parts – Cité d’Agde, Grau d’Agde and Cap d’Agde. And while each of the three communities has its riverfront cafés and historic buildings to lure the visitor, it is Cap d'Agde that holds the greatest interest, for it has a casino, a theme park, a water slide park, and most notably its quartier naturiste, a small nudist village that is often regarded as the world's capital of nudism. Here, at the quartier naturiste, residents and even visitors can go shopping, banking, and even party at the local bars and clubs in the buff. The mini-village has one hotel and four shopping centers, as well as a beachfront on the river, and draws some 40,000 curious visitors each year.

Location

Agde is situated in the Languedoc on the river Hérault, a couple of miles (4 km) in from the Mediterranean coast. It is approximately 470 miles (740 km) south of Paris.

Principal draws in Agde, apart from the Cap d’Agde quartier naturiste, are the Agathois Museum which has displays centered on the history of Agde, including prehistoric items, period costumes, ceramics, art and archaeology exhibits, and wine-making paraphernalia; Musée de l’Ephèbe notable for its underwater archaeology collection, salvaged relics from shipwrecks and cargo, several antique ship ornaments, and, best of all, a 2,300-year-old Greek statue of Ephebe of Agde. Another place of interest at Agde is the 16th-century Brescau Fort, just off the coast, and accessed via ferries that depart from Cap d’Agde and Grau d’Agde daily between mid-June and mid-September.
