Baltimore Travel Guide
Introduction
Baltimore is singularly the most unpretentious American big city there is – what you see is what you get. And what you get is a healthy dose of all-American blue-collar grit, along with Catholic churches, commercial brick buildings, chicken wings, steamed Chesapeake blue crabs, Baltimore brews, Baltimore Orioles, revitalized neighborhoods, a slice of unembellished history, and a bold, distinctive skyline silhouetted with towers, steeples, domes, tall chimneys, monuments, and giant, modern architectural statements to dwarf the entire ensemble. There are decommissioned submarines and warships in the harbor, unique museums to browse in, well-stocked antique shops to discover, and old-fashioned pubs with an endless array of beers on tap. It's important, though, that one like sports, history, hearty food, wholesome tunes, John Waters' Hairspray, the Star-Spangled Banner and Edgar Allan Poe. Ultimately, utilitarian underpinnings it may have, but here is a surprisingly vibrant and unapologetic call-em-as-you-see-em city, the self-styled "Greatest City in America" – with no dearth of unexpected charm!
