Stralsund Travel Guide
Introduction
Stralsund is a lovely old town on the Baltic coast of northern Germany, just one bridge away from Rügen, Germany's largest island. The main reason to go there is to see its large Brick Gothic buildings, notably the 13th-century Rathaus (town hall), which is nothing short of a masterpiece of that architectural genre, as well as the huge Nikolaikirche and the gabled and turreted Wolflamhaus with its candlesnuffer rooftops, all of which occupy the Old Market Square. Marienkirche, another great example of the Brick Gothic architectural style and just as impressive and as large as Nikolaikirche, stands on New Market Square. Among other priorities is the old St. Catherine's Monastery, which houses two museums, including the German Maritime Museum which celebrates Stralsund's maritime history and is one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
Location
Stralsund is located in the north German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, on the southern coast of Strelasund, some 68 miles (110 km) northeast of Rostock.
Trivia
Stralsund's most famous daughter is Angela Merkel, Germany's current and first woman chancellor. Merkel still maintains an office on the main shopping street in town.
