Cochem Travel Guide
Introduction
Cochem is a supremely charming, picture-postcard town in the Mosel Valley. It has scores of picturesque half-timbered houses, a few surviving medieval defense towers and equally ancient city gates, and a huge castle on a hilltop that surveys the town and the valley beyond. In any case, the town, not surprisingly, is a monstrously popular travel destination, particularly during the summer months and around Advent, when it's practically overrun by tourists. Needless to say, there good restaurants and cafés and lovely lottle shops to cater to the summer crowd.
Location
Cochem is situated on the left bank of the Mosel River in the upper Mosel Valley.
The principal draw in Cochem is its castle, Reichsburg Cochem, perched on a hill overlooking the town, at Schlossstraße 36. The castle was originally founded in 1000 AD, and remained imperial property until 1294 when the emperor pawned it to the bishop of Trier. It was subsequently destroyed by the French in 1689 and rebuilt in the late 19th century in its present-day Neo-Gothic style, with towers and turrets and all the frills you see today.
