Bayreuth Travel Guide

Introduction

Bayreuth is famous for its associations to 19th-century German composer Richard Wagner, and for the annual Bayreuth Festival that celebrates Wagner's work with featured performances of his operas. It is therefore hardly surprising that Wagner sights are a priority here, notably the Wagner Museum and the Festspielhaus (Festival Theater). The other person Bayreuth has deep associations with is the Princess Wilhelmina, sister of Prussia’s Frederick the Great, who endowed the town with its rich trove of Baroque and Rococo buildings, among them the 18th-century Margravial Opera House which has the distinction of being one of the finest Baroque theaters in Europe. The town also has more museums than perhaps any other town its size, as well as its fair share of public parks and old churches, and a handful of castles to boot.

Location

Bayreuth is locate on the Red Main River in the Franken (Franconia) region of Bavaria. It is situated along the northeastern end of the Franken region, between the Fichtelgebirge Mountains and Franconian Switzerland. It is approximately 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of Nürnberg, or 50 kilometers (30 miles) east of Bamberg.
