Wismar is a small Hanseatic port city on the Baltic coast in northern Germany, located roughly midway between Rostock and Lübeck. To vampire movie fans it will be instantly recognizable as the locale of the 1922 film, Nosferatu, in which the town is called "Wisborg." But for the average tourist, the town's big draw is its market square which, with an area of 10,000 square meters, is the largest in all of Germany. There is also an authentic old town here, with its medieval layout still intact, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Besides which, the city has its fair share of Brick Gothic buildings that are unique to northern German cities along the Baltic.

Wismar's principal attractions, which are mainly lined along the market square, include the 19th-century Neo-Classical Rathaus (Town Hall) which stretches almost the full length of the square, and the 14th-century Brick Gothic Alter Schwede which has the oldest unaltered façade in town. Other priorities include a string of churches, notably the 13th-century Marienkirche and St. Georgen-Kirche, and the 14th-century Nikolaikirche which has the fourth-highest nave in Germany, at 37 meters (112 feet), and is one of the best examples of Brick Gothic construction in Wismar.

Wismar is situated on the Bay of Wismar in the German state of Mecklenberg-Vorpommern, some 30 kilometers (18 miles) north of Schwerin or 45 kilometers (28 miles) east of Lübeck. It has a population of about 45,000.
