Schwerin Travel Guide

Introduction

Schwerin is the capital of the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in northeastern Germany. It is an unpretentious little town, surrounded by freshwater lakes and centered around its principal attraction, the supremely historic Schwerin Castle (Schloss Schwerin). The castle is actually quite lovely, with beautifully landscaped gardens, located on an island smack in the middle of Lake Schwerin, and it's perhaps the main reason to come to Schwerin. Other than the palace, the town has a handful of old churches and an 18th-century town hall with some interest, as well as a 13th-century Brick Gothic cathedral, and a hugely rewarding art museum, the State Art Museum, which houses a fabulous collection of Dutch, German, Renaissance and contemporary art, and arguably the world's best archive of colored graphics from the GDR (German Democratic Republic) era.

Location

Schwerin is situated in northeastern Germany and is one of the only major cities in the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern that is situated inland. It is 57 miles (92 km) east of Hamburg.
