El Establo Hotel (on the road to Monteverde in Cerro Plano,50 rooms, 2 restaurants, jacuzzi, cable TV lounge, fireplace lounge, pool, gym, full breakfast included). We cannot do justice to this hotel by translating its name as “The Stable,” nor by describing it as built in a style that resembles a converted barn. But it has a very homey kind of American horse-loving appeal, accented by room doors that look as if they open top and bottom – Dutch or cottage doors – and high-ceilinged public areas instead of hallways. Large, pleasing quarters have queen beds. The unique country style is a reflection of the owner, Ruth Campbell, who came to Monteverde as one of the original Quaker settlers when she was a baby. Large windows around the hotel look out into the 61-hectare/150-acre gardens and fruit trees that attract many birds and butterflies. Spotlessly clean and comfortable, El Establo is simple and priced very reasonably for the excellent service provided. Family friendly atmosphere. No smoking and no alcohol served.
