Fat Tire Bike Tours offer the most enjoyable English bike tours in Paris, with day-trips to Versailles (Euro 50), the Loire Valley (see web site) and Monet’s Gardens in Giverny (Euro 65) as well. Their Paris Day Tour includes a stop at the Berthillon ice cream shop (Euro 24) and the Night Tour includes a Seine boat cruise with wine (Euro 28; both tours Euro 48). The three- to four-hour tours are easy going, with stops every few hundred yards for commentary and photo opportunities. All ages are welcome, with child seats, kids’ bikes, trailers, helmets and rain gear available. You can also rent bikes from Euro 2 per hour to i50 per week. The shop (formerly known as Mike’s Bike Tours), run by friendly Texas native David Mebane, is a short walk from the Eiffel Tower; it’s an English-speaking oasis with a satellite TV in the lounge area, Starbucks coffee, lots of Paris guidebooks to read, cheap Internet access, telephone cards and pay phone, clean bathrooms, and Bailey (David’s fluffy dog). Visitors can book a hotel, store luggage, meet other travelers, and pick up the latest copies of the Paris Voice or Paris Time Out magazines. Student discounts available. US dollars, euros and traveler’s checks accepted (no credit cards).
