Inside, once past the sun-filled, enclosed terrace from under the glass canopy, the mountains seem to hang over your head, the place is an extravagant celebration of Louis XVI and pre-Revolutionary France. Considering that Marseille was one of the first cities outside Paris to join the French Revolution, the theme seems ironic. There are massive fireplaces, enormous flower arrangements, gilt mirrors and portraits of royals. A painting of Marie Antoinette dominates a pink and furbelowed powder room where swan-shaped faucets emerge from a huge and astonishingly ornate, pink and grey marble, mirrored vanity. Out back, a pretty walled garden completes the picture.
