At the very top of Gordes, the castle dates from 1031, with additions made in 1525. It demonstrates both medieval and Renaissance styles. In more recent times, the castle was touched with piquant scandal. It was owned and restored by the artist Vasarely, who created a foundation and museum to display his works. After he died in 1997, the foundation was accused of financial improprieties and alleged tax fraud, lost its tax-exempt status and saw one of its executives jailed. Today, a museum devoted to a local artist, Pol Mara, occupies the castle, providing the opportunity to see the building, its Renaissance spiral staircase and monumental fireplace. Reach the castle by spiraling up to the very top of the town. There is a tourist office at the castle. Open every day, except Christmas and New Year’s Day, 10 am to noon and 2 to 6 pm. Information at the tourist office.
