Until the completion of the Dom, Groß St Martin was the largest church in Cologne. Originally built from 1150 to 1250, this Romanesque church with its fortress-like square tower and four octagonal turrets, still is a major feature on the Cologne skyline. It was originally a Benedictine monastery church built on what was then an island in the Rhine. The church was virtually destroyed duringWorldWar II and the reconstruction has a stark, almost naked interior.
