One of the most picturesque routes is the Heinrich Heine Route. In 1824, Heine used this 22-km (13-mile) approach from Insenburg. (The Brockenbahn, see below, offers an easier descent, or ascent.) Guided tours of around five hours on the Goethe Route are organized by Altenau Tourismus
