Apart from the magnificent half-timber buildings in the old town, the major attraction is the knight’s castle Schloss Wernigerode. It is on a 350-m (1,148-foot) hill outside the town and can be reached by walking up (1½ km/one mile) or taking the Bimmelbahn from the town center. The origins of the castle go back to the 12th century, but only a few cellar vaults remain from that period. Around 1500, the castle was updated and served as residence for the Counts of Stolberg, who had to flee their own castle during the peasants’ war. Lack of water never made the castle much of a defensible proposition, although it again served as a Baroque residence for the counts of Ilsenburg. Its current knight’s castle look dates from 1885, when Count Ottozu Stolberg Wernigerode, for years Otto von Bismarck’s vice chancellor of the German empire, rebuilt the castle in the Historicist style. It combined all architectural styles from the Gothic to Baroque into a fairy tale castle.
