Located inland, away from the Danube, the Vácrátót Botanical Garden houses one of Hungary’s richest plant collections. The botanical garden is gigantic, at almost one square mile. Count Vigyazo founded it in the 1870s. He bequeathed the garden to the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Waterfalls, artificial stone hills and mountains, mock ruins, forest-like glades and the garden itself will take anywhere from two to three hours to walk. The lake, overshad-owed with willows and brush, is a romantic delight. Over 12,000 species make this the largest collection in Hungary. Coordinate the visit with one of their summer concerts in the garden. Tickets are at the Philharmonia ticket office in Budapest. Turn east off Route 2, north of Szõdliget (five km/three miles before Vác) or by bus from the Nyugati train station (1½ hr) or by bus from the northern end of the blue line metro (Újpest). The Vácrátót Botanical Garden is open daily 8 am to 6 pm, Oct-Mar 8 am-4 pm.
