The natural surroundings of three of Hungary’s most famous industrial towns give us a glimpse of the Bükk and Zemplén Hills. Start at Salgótarján, at the end of Route 21, in the northern section of the country. Follow the trail with the blue stripe and the blue cross. From Salgótarján, it winds through the hills and around valleys and gulleys in the Marancs- Medves Hills and finally through Heves-Borsod County to the town of Ózd, up through the Upponyi and Bükk Hills to finally end at Diósgyör. In Salgótarján look for the Salgó castle atop basaltic peaks, and the underground mining museum. In Bárna stop to take in the view from Nagy-ko Peak, and then on your way you can bathe or fish at a lake created by a natural landslide, the Arló. You walk past the Upponyi Pass and the Lázbérc Reservoir (in Hungarian the Upponyi-szoros and Lázbérci víztároló), where you can take out your fishing rod again. Or, press on through the sights at Miskolc-Omassa and Felsohámor, and finally, at Miskolc-Lillafüred you can end your journey with the healing air of the caves, a curative agent for respiratory diseases.
