As we enter Gyöngyös, Mergres út (Route 24) changes its name to Apris 4 út, just after its intersection with Eger út. You will pass the Alsóvárosi ferences templom (Lower City Franciscan Church) to the left, built circa 1400, and “updated” with Baroque ornamentation in later centuries. It is set back on Baratók tér (Baratók Square) and houses a Gothic sanctuary, a medieval library, and wooden statues carved by József Habenstreit sometime between 1759-1760. Inside, János Vak Bottyán lies buried, one of the legendary figures in Hungarian history. Second only to Rákóczi in the military campaigns of the revolution for independence (1703-1711), he was a commoner who had risen to rank in the Imperial forces, and then chose to fight for the cause when the revolution began. Also known as blind Bottyán, because he had lost one of his eyes while fighting the Turks, he won a series of stunning victories against the Imperial forces using the “Hussar” fighting tactics.
