Another piece of his (a fresco of Madonna del Sasso) is just out of town, en route to La Verna, at the Basilica di Santa Maria del Sasso. It also has a beautiful 15th-century cloister designed by Giuliano da Maiano. Before you head out, check out Bibbiena’s range of historical palazzi. The most important is the late 15th-century Palazzo Dovizi, with rusticated façade evidently inspired by Florentine palazzi. There’s also the 17th-century Palazzo Niccolini and, next door, the Palazzo Marcucci, with its striking façade and delicately frescoed rooms.
