The old city walls bring you around the Passaggio del Prato to Piazza del Duomo, where you will find the imposing Cattedrale di San Pietro Maggiore. Arezzo’s boldest and most sober religious edifice. The church was built in various phases from the end of the 13th to the beginning of the 16th century (when its Gothic imprint was finally completed), with the Neo-Gothic façade added over three centuries later to replace an incomplete 15th-century predecessor. Inside, Giullaume de Marcillat’s 16th-century stained glass windows keep the three naves pleasantly light. Note the Arca di San Donato, a rich urn of decorated white marble (15th-century, presbytery), an interesting Trinity by Andrea della Robbia (Cappella della Madonna del Conforto, off the left nave) and, just behind the 14th-century sculpted cenotaph of Bishop Guido Tarlati, a fresco of Mary Magdalen by Piero della Francesco (around 1460, entrance door to the sacristy).
