The center of town is marked by the natural rock formation of Masso Leopoldino which was reinforced by walls at the end of the 17th century. To the north, narrow streets descend to the Renaissance gateway “La Porte dei Merli” and into the Lente Valley. As you wander the steep streets, sharp corners give impressive views of houses hanging precipitously on the edge of the cliff. Keep your eyes out for the rusticated tufa stone and travertine doorframes along Via Selvi; the intricate labyrinth of cellars, caves and tower houses packed together on Piazza Vanni; and the Cantinone, one of the most interesting cellars in the old town, which consists of a series of large rooms called bottaio (tunnels) that extend some 30-40 feet into the tufa in the entire northeastern end of town.
